I think you may have TTL and Auto flash modes confused. Your FE-2
will work with TTL flashes that have Nikon TTL dedication (with
the four contacts on the flash foot). In "TTL", you may set any
aperture on the lens (so long as you don't choose one that is too small and so requires more than the maximum power the flash has, or too wide
and so requires less than the minimum power the flash has). In TTL,
the flash sensor is inside the camera and reads the light reflected off the film during exposure. In "Auto", which will work with any camera,
you set the aperture the flash recommends, and the sensor on the
flash reads the light reflected by the subject during exposure.
Then, of course, there is also "manual" mode......
