Hoya - for high optical and mechanical quality and moderate price...
I would avoid Tiffen, due to a tendency to spontaneously fog
over time (the rims are too thick for use on many wide-angles,
also). For top quality, it is hard to beat the Nikkor filters,
and the other premium brands are unlikely to be cheaper or better.
The Cokins are plastic, and unlikely to serve well for simple
lens protection. For practical purposes, the premium filters
are no better than the Hoya filters (metal-rim versions).

Dunno... I personally don't like the polarizer (fake-looking color, and almost two stops loss), but many people like it... Since I do
a lot of interior work with slides, the 80C, FLD, and cc30M are
my most useful color slide-film filters. I rarely find a use for
my warming and cooling filters (presumably the reason for taking a
photo in a given outdoor light is that one likes that light, so
there is little inclination to try to change the color characteristics
of that light...).
