Ah, but that is the key - and it takes some film/experience. You could
expose 2-3 rolls of 100-speed slide film under widely-varying conditions,
bracketing in 1/3rd steps over a 5-step range for some, a three-step
range for most (+/o/- 1/3rd stop, by changing compensation or ASA), then
judging the best exposure with light-box/projector/bright-cloudy-sky
viewing of slides. If the best exposure is consistently attached to one
of the compensations, you have found a standard... From that, you can establish bright-light and dim-light reference lights for checking other meters (I use two lights in my darkroom - one particular spot on each of
the white wall and the light-box).
