Hmmm, technically this is nonsense - grain size and quality
is a characteristic of film speed, emulsion type, development
amount, developer type, and exposure. But perceptually, the
more sharp detail and texture there is in the image, the less
grain is visible. So, a smaller stop would give greater DOF
in the image, therefore probably fewer/smaller smooth-toned
(out of focus) areas (unless the subject is smooth...), and
using f16 when taking the photo may then appear to result in
less graininess in the image...
BTW, using f16 in a good short FL enlarging lens rather than,
say, around f5.6-8, will result in a less sharp print from
the negative, throwing out some graininess along with image
sharpness...
