F8 for best sharpness with 35mm (unless you are using a wide-angle,
or zoom, which may require a smaller stop for good edges and corners),
f16 for best DOF with the greatest acceptable loss in sharpness, or
f11, for a compromise, or any other aperture that is appropriate for what you are photographing (f1.8 got me a surf burst over rocks on the
Oregon coast in the late evening that was more than acceptable in
both DOF and sharpness.....).
