As many of you with long (by 'net standards ;-) memories may
remember, I have a very low opinion of most flash add-ons
when they are used under most conditions (they result only
in a loss of flash power, with no improvement in the image
quality). Simply put, the sharpness of shadow edges in flash
photos is determined by the light-source size and the light-
source/subject/background distances, and if you are controlling
only the light-source size by adding a reflector, under most
conditions you will need to make that reflector FAR larger
than most add-ons (and place it far enough away from the flash
so that most of it is illuminated) to make a noticeable
difference in the photo (it's called an umbrella, a softbox,
or a reflecting ceiling/wall.....). Add-ons (a Styrofoam cup
works well, and is CHEAP!) can be used to place the flash
light-source above the lens when taking vertical photos -
otherwise, save your money (and batteries), and skip the
silly flash add-ons.
