Win98 and Premiere 5.1 work well together - I suspect
software set-up/use and/or hardware problems...
With Premiere, save the project very often - it
does not crash in my set-up when I do that. Capture
cards can conflict with other hardware - and if you
have insufficient RAM (128-megs is OK...) and HD
space (especially if you are working on the program
drive, a "no-no"...;-), you will have problems.
It is not necessary to dedicate a computer to video
use only - I use mine for large mini-DV projects,
and also use it for many other purposes. The hardest
function to set up for is video editing - once that
runs well, most everything else is easy. For sound,
CoolEdit96 is a good, cheap program (syntrillium.com)
with a noise-reducer, and Sound Forge XP is another
good cheap alternative.
