Ah, you are asking the BURNING question in mini-DV! A couple of years after
the introduction of the first kinda affordable REALLY high-quality video
image-maker, the Sony VX-1000, there are finally a very few cards for PC's
on the market that will accept the digital signal from the camcorder and drop
it directly onto the hard drive (no generation losses!). BUT, the &*%$#
systems STILL don't work very well...!!! The cheapest card is a bad joke
(no digital [FireWire] output), the Spark is about $800 with Premier, and is
almost workable (no analogue input, but...) - though it doesn't get along
with a LONG list of computer parts..., and the $4000 one will accept analogue
input, but still sufferes from the other limitations shared by the others:
2 gig in/out file size limit (less than 10 minutes video time), and the need
for HUGE HD's (and expensive fast/wide SCSI's at that...). I am still VERY
eagerly waiting for practical (and reasonably-priced) editing of DV tapes
on the computer....! BTW, you may want to visit the several NG's devoted
to video, under rec.video.xxxxx - though you may find surprisingly little
mention of mini-DV editing (methinks almost no one actually has it up
and running yet...).
Hope This Helps
