It would take a bit under 6.5 gigs to store 30 minutes of mini-DV.
16 to 25 gig UDMA drives are fairly inexpensive
and one should fit easily into the VAIO (though I have not
looked inside, I seem to remember it had one open bay).
The Medea is overkill - the mini-DV data rate is constant
and moderate, easily handled by most single 5400rpm UDMA
drives...
