The video camera CCDs are normally very sensitive to IR, but
a filter is used internally to block IR, leaving camcorders
very insensitive to IR without having the internal filter
switchable. Using an IR-pass/visible-light-blocking filter
results in sensitivity too low for decent image quality even
on a very bright day. Unfortunately, Sony has chosen to
spoil a very nice feature (daylight-IR capability, great
for landscape shooting) for a silly reason (people may try
to use it for "X-ray" videos - but it really does not work
