The TC14A ( - and converters DO work well with short lenses - you should
see this converter on a 16mm fisheye [sharp!!!]) would offer the least
performance loss. (BTW, lenses faster than about f2 do not meter-read
correctly on converters, so the 50mm f1.4 would be more awkward to use
than the 45 [and stopping down to at least f4-5.6 is required for good performance when using converters, so a speed lens doesn't offer much advantage].)
For a 2X, the TC200/201 and the Vivitar Macro Converter are both good
(with the lens well stopped down), but the widest useable effective
aperture with good performance may be disappointingly small... And, BTW,
a converter can often actually reduce the linear distortion of the lens
used on the converter...
