You may be confusing comments made about different versions (I list
all the Nikkor SLR lens optical versions on my web page [under "I
babble"], and evaluate many). Virtually all the Nikkor tele lenses
are superb, but there are minor reservations and variations. The
original 85mm f1.8 non-AI non-multi-coated version was flarey
with strong backlight, but the current AF (and later early-version
MF...) 85 f1.8's are really excellent. If I were to choose the two
overall best general-use lenses in the range you mentioned, I would
choose the AF 85mm f1.8 and the MF 105 f2.8 macro - but most of the
others are so close as to be indistinguishable without very careful
observation (so don't worry about it...! ;-). One thing that I
appreciate about most of the Nikkor teles is that they are quite
sharp wide open under most common shooting conditions.
