The Canopus and MainConcept codecs are generally
regarded as the best (see: www.David-Ruether-Photography.com/original_vs_10th-gen.htm),
but even the MS codec is quite good for low generation
numbers, and the MC can be substituted for use with
OHCI cards... BTW, for any but altered footage (not
cuts...), all perform the same, since the codec is not
used).

I think VV uses its own(?) - and you can substitute
codecs (though the Canopus only works with Canopus
cards).

Not necessarily... (see above). BTW, I still prefer
the Canopus Raptor, used with Premiere 5.1, and this
combination can be quite cheap, used...;-)
