Multicoated lenses and filters are a PAIN to clean!
I generally use a single-coated UV filter over
a carefully cleaned lens, when possible. My
choices for cleaners: worst, the little bulb with
brush (not enough directed air pressure to do much
good, brush easily picks up finger oils, transfers
them to lens...); best: Kodak lens tissue used in
single sheets with a flat side down, used only
after washing hands with detergent, with a
fogging with breath (directed upward at the lens
only, to prevent putting hard-to-clean spit marks
on the glass), and only after blowing off loose
material with a large air-syringe. Q-Tips work
best for small areas. If this does not work, I
use alcohol, lighter fluid, or Windex applied
to the lens with lens tissue or Q-Tip (NEVER
applied directly to a lens!), followed by the
above. If even this does not work, I make a
1:1 paste from Palmolive dish detergent and
water, apply it with a tissue or cotton swab,
and remove the paste with window cleaner - then
finish with breath and tissue/swab. Nothing
has resisted this treatment...! ;-) DO NOT use
any silicone-based cleaner or impregnated tissue
(it looks great for a while, but gradually fogs,
and it is VERY DIFFICULT to remove!).
