There are two kinds of steady shot, electrical/digital and optical.
The optical type (Sony top end Hi-8's and the VX-1000 and VX-700
digital) does not degrade image sharpness (though there are times when
it is best to turn it off [when using a tripod, or WA converter at
the short end, sometimes]). The electrical/digital type may or may not
further degrade image sharpness if switched on, but does degrade sharpness
just by being on the camera (Sony TR-400 Hi-8, PC-7 digital [though it is
not too bad on this one]).
