Thanks for the comments! I try to report the negatives,
since so few others do, and I find the negative aspects
at least as important as the positive in making buying
decisions. Since my main interest in Mini-DV camcorders
is in portable, easy-to-use (and even, dare I say it,
"automatic"), reasonably-affordable-yet-high-quality
cameras, the JVC DV500 (and, really, the XL-1 - but a
couple of them were handy...;-) did not qualify (as
most of the one-chippers also did not, but they were
also "handy"...). It is unlikely that I will seek out
a DV500 (a couple are available to me, actually...),
but if one is around while I'm checking out something
else of interest, I may give it a try....;-) BTW,
with a few reservations, I'm pretty satisfied with
the VX-2000 - Sony has done a pretty good (though
not faultless) job of design with this, and the camera
is capable of producing first rate (for Mini-DV)
results under a variety of shooting conditions.
Overall I consider it the best of the Mini-DV
cameras I have tried...
