"Graininess" can appear for many reasons
in video images:
- too low a light level (gain too high)
- ND filter in, in moderate light (gain
too high)
- AE-A f-stop selected too small for the
light level (gain too high)
- fine detail rendered by a sharp Mini-DV
camcorder ("mosquito" noise)
- one-chip high-resolution Mini-DV camcorder
used ("mosquito" noise, plus "stairstepping",
which can be mistaken for noise in complex
images with high-contrast textures)
- color-impurity noise in one-chip camcorder
- visible color filter in one-chip camcorder
- poor TV or computor monitor, with large
pixel size
