Canon makes a very nice stereo mic (the one that comes with the L1/L2),
with variable stereo separation, and (in mono mode), increased gain.
Frequency response is upper-midrange humped for good intelligibility
at several feet on location. Overall, the sound is good from this
mic for general purpose on-camera use. Price is under $200. An
alternative that works well (though more awkwardly) is two Radio
Shack PZM mics taped back-to-back (RS sells the various adapters
to get you into the camcorder) - the sound quality is excellent,
and when needed, the mics can be placed well away from the camera
(they come with long cords).
