It is surprising how good the audio can sound
with so-so noise specs (how quickly we forget
the "Hi-Fi" early days, and the excellent
sound produced by some surprisingly "antique"
gear, like dual KLH 9s on a pair of Marantz
30s, with a Marantz 7 and ADC 10E Mk II - or
a Quad system, even in mono... [noise wasn't
low, but the sound was so good on top of the
noise, who cared...?;-]). I think both the
VX2000 and XL1 do offer line-level input,
but, at least in the case of the VX2000,
this does not bypass the mic preamp,
unfortunately...
