It sounds like either the digital zoom is still on
(you will see a segmented zoom range indicator in
the VF); the focus is locked in manual-mode; you are
too close to the subject with the lens zoomed tele
(the minimum-focus distance for the lens changes a
LOT with zooming); or the camera is defective...
If the third, adding a moderate close-up lens will
permit tele close-focus and WA infinity-focus, but
will preclude correct infinity-focus with the lens
zoomed long...
