"Distortion" needs to be defined...;-)
Technically, for a rectangular-perspective lens,
it is the inability to render straight subject
lines imaged off center as straight lines in the
image. But, this "fault" is not necessarily bad...
If the "distortion" is a smooth barrel type, it
can help with keeping rounded objects placed off
center looking more natural, and with producing
smoother-looking panning since sizes vary less
in the frame with movement of the frame.
