Then I would forget the "upright" style - the best, like
the PC-1, are designed to have good picture and sound under
good conditions, but what you are looking to do requires
better. You can find reviews of several mini-DV camcorders
on my web site (under "I babble"), which include frame-grabs
from a too-dark room to show their low-light capabilities,
and I also describe the sound and noise characteristics.
You may like the Sony TRV-900 for your purposes, though
several others may also serve well...
