Sound "quality" has many aspects, only one of which is the
ratio of signal to noise (either electronic or mechanical
noise - both are important, though...). In addition is the
freedom from electronic distortion and the range,
smoothness, and "flatness" of the sound from the built-in
mic (and from the electronics with external gear used).
Most camcorder audio is very "colored" (some to an
unacceptable degree, my opinion of the GL-1 sound...) and
most camcorders sound different from most others - and many
pick up unacceptable levels of noise with both the built-in
mic and with external mics (if too close, or if physically
attached to the camcorder). I have two VX-2000s, though, and
the sound from both has been excellent (though not
perfect...), with little pickup of motor and zooming
noises, little electronic noise, with good enough
mic characteristics, and with unobtrusive action from
the AGC circuits. If your camcorder does pick up camera
noises, though (most one-chippers do...), Cool Edit
(www.syntrillium.com) has an excellent inexpensive noise
reduction module that easily removes it.
