Sharpness nut that I am, it is surprising for me to say
this, but the old Tamron SP 28-135mm f4-4.5 was *very*
good (and nearly constant-aperture, and reasonably fast,
and reasonably good wide-open - though it had a large
amount of pincushion distortion at the long end...).
Better (though not quite as long...), is the Nikkor
24-120mm f3.5-5.6 (lower distortion, better corner
performance, higher contrast, better sharpness), though
not by a lot. (The above comments should *NOT* be
extended to the 28-200mm Tamron, however, just the one
zoom...) BTW, that Tamron 28-135 MUST be used with
the big shade designed for it to avoid serious ghosting.
