As you point out, it depends on the environment (and
probably also on the quality of the wires and connectors,
too). I used to record music in Seattle with homemade
mics and fairly long runs of unbalanced cable (>50')
without problems, so I would think runs of 20' or so
with a boom mic would not offer problems except in
rf-rich areas - but even there, good rf bypass at the
preamp input, good cables, and "tight" shielded
connectors may still work well enough...
