If you have exactly duplicated the right channel into the
emptied left channel, the result WILL be mono (unless
the phase of one channel has been inverted...). You must
remove the left channel info before copying the right
into it, or you will get off-center "sorta-mono"...

The effect, if properly done, will be mono - but you can
use various techniques to "spoil the mono" (EQ, phasing, etc. applied differently to the channels...).
