You did what I would recommend: try it! ;-)
I agree log sounds wrong, but the straight
line non-log option also often sounds wrong
to me - I do a lot of "shaping" of sound
track crossovers to get them to my liking
(often a mid-line "bump" added to the fade
on one side is sufficient, but you can add
more nodes to get the sound transition really
right [this is one of the neat things about
graphic multi-handle mixers...;-]). Same with
the picture "rubber bands" - you can do some
REALLY great-looking dissolves by not always
making them "straight-line".
