The "rubber bands" permit to-the-frame control of
levels - hardly crude, I think... (BTW, the shift-key
enables overall level change of an area between handles
[added by clicking on a "rubber band"] - and right-clicking
on a track accesses filters, and also "gain" [including
"normalize"]) With all the filters and options for level
adjusts, one can do quite a bit with the audio in Premiere.
Add Cool Edit's nifty noise-reduction and ability to
smooth clipping (no specific module - I do it manually...),
and all but pro-level sound mixing/manipulation can be done
(good enough for video!).
