: Is it advisable when you want to purchase a lens for your VX2000 for it to be aspherical or not?
From what I understand, aspherics themselves offer no inherent advantages but the ability to design with fewer elements in a lens system; the same correction level can be met without using aspherical elements if more elements are used... For camcorders, the add-on lens converters generally have no more than three elements, and it may be reasonable to assume that better performance can be had if one of those elements is aspheric. If the converter has only a single element, there is not much choice. Minimizing the number of elements used (with air-spaces) often has the advantage of lowering the ghosting and flare levels, color shift, and other errors (though it works against flattening the image field and improving edge/corner sharpness). It may be best to judge an optical system by its performance, rather than by characteristics of its design (thus possibly avoiding the ill effects of advertising hype...;-).
