I do this often in P-5, and it is probably as easy in P-6.
(BTW, do not follow the other poster's advice or your
method, above - they result in flicker...). On the timeline,
place the cursor at the last frame in the clip (the one
that shows the image instead of black or the next clip).
Export "frame" (BMP file), import it, put it on the
timeline, and stretch/shrink it to desired length... BTW,
this is quite useful for extending too-short clips through
part of a transition, and the results often do not show the
lack of motion...
