While most pro mics have XLR connectors, for short cable
runs there is nothing inherently better sonically about
balanced XLR connectors over unbalanced mini-plug or RCA.
Mechanically and electrically the XLR is a more secure
connector, but it is large, and since it is still being
adapted to a mini-plug on the TRV-900, it offers no
advantage except for the larger selection of good mics
with XLR connectors... BTW, I've had good luck with the
small and cheap Azden wireless mics, and the Stenheiser
MKE-300 and Sony Z157 shotgun mics - and these have
mini-plug connectors...)
