How were you monitoring?
If from the headphone out, especially if the level is
turned up somewhat above normal, the above is consistent
with what I would expect - but I would expect better from
the audio outs (the VX-2000 has been very quiet for me).
Also, disconnecting the mic may make the preamp noisier
than it would be with the mic connected...
