The VX-2000 headphone amp is noisy and high-end peaked
(as are many headphones) - line out should be used for
noise evaluation, with a good sound system; the built-in
mic is unusually low gain, so matching sensitivities of
external mics is important; the ACG is unusually high in
dynamic range (leaving average sound level lower than
usual); available gain settings are unusually wide. With
the above, it is VERY easy to think the VX-2000 audio
is noisy, when in (good...) practice, it is not. Any
pro, with a casual checkout of unfamiliar gear,
particularly the VX-2000 with its somewhat unusual audio
set-ups, can mistake mis-settings/misunderstandings of
the gear for excess noise... The VX-2000 audio is
reasonably quiet for camcorder gear in its price
range, IF the user understands and accommodates its
quirks. It is worth doing that, since the VX-2000
picture quality is outstanding (and unequaled) in its
price range.
