Sound Forge XP 4 can grab the AVI sound tracks and resample them to
44kHz cheaply (I paid $77), though the processing time is horrific! ;-)
(My thanks to Jim Addie for this important tidbit!) This may not be
your problem though - the effect is quite audible on some material,
but subtle or inaudible on most... (I assume that you are not using
the mic inputs, but just the FireWire cable for sound transfer...?;-)
