To operate it, push it in. It will stop the lens down to whatever
aperture (or inbetween aperture) you have set, which may be reset
as you look in the VF to see the effect (the VF will get darker as
you use smaller stops, though the film will be properly exposed if
you meter without pressing the DOF button). I would suggest using
DOF control more for adjusting what out-of-focus areas of the photo
look like, rather than for seeing if things are within the DOF,
since it is hard to judge this accurately, especially in the dark
finder. You can also use the dark image to get a better idea of what tones will drop out when rendered on the film, which has a shorter
brightness range than our eye/brain mechanism does.
