If you are looking for the highest quality and durability,
stick with the Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 (don't get too hung up on the
subtle-at-best "D" feature). The Nikkor converters will not maintain
AF, but are excellent mechanically and optically (The unusual TC14C is
an excellent match for the non-D 80-200, giving prime-lens performance
from f4 [f5.6 working aperture], and the TC14/14B is almost as good.
The TC201 or Vivitar Macro converter is OK with the 80-200 for 2X, and probably as good as the mediocre Tamron 200-400, but it is not wonderful.) [rest of original post deleted]
