It is pretty well established that recent UDMA drives (even
5400rpm ones), if used as dedicated video drives (and kept
defragmented), work well for capture/play of mini-DV...
I suspect the problem you have with dropped frames
could be solved by means other than using very fast (and
expensive) drives. One of the several advantages of editing
NTSC in the mini-DV format is the easily satisfied minimum
drive requirements - though PAL may require maybe 20%
higher minimum sustained data transfer rates (?), still easily
satisfied with good UDMA drives, I would think...
