Hmmm, you don't say what you mean by "slightly better contrast"...
In my experience, Tri-X shot at a true 400, and processed in D-76
1:1 (with time cut somewhat from Kodak recommendations, since I use
a condenser enlarger) produces fine, full tonal range negatives under
most shooting conditions. I do not think Tri-X "pulls" well for
high-contrast sunny conditions, so I use Fuji Neopan 400 at 250
under those conditions with the same processing as I normally use
for Tri-X at 400. BTW, Tri-X at 800 is fine (with normal contrast)
in Acufine, when the speed is needed and a slight loss in image
quality is acceptable.
