The Tokina I checked was an early version - Tokina may have improved
the design, but even the version I checked would be fine at a few
hundred feet, even at wider apertures. It did show extreme degradation
of image quality as it was focused toward minimum distance, and was
not very good even at 50 feet or so. Quality change with distance
has been notably present with the (older) Tokina zooms I have tried.
I like the 70-210 E series Nikkor - good wide open, good on the TC14A
converter by f5.6 - a nice performer at a decent price (and it is
a constant f4 throughout its range).
Hope this helps.
