No Nikkor TC will AF with the 80-200mm f2.8 AF, but all that fit
will work with "M" and "A" exposure modes (without aperture readout,
except with the "E" converters [see below]). Performance is good with
the TC14 and TC14B converters (useable wide open, very good over most
of the frame by f4), and a bit better with the rare TC14C (useable
wide open, excellent over most of the frame by f4). (One stop loss
when using a 1.4X...) Manual focus is noticeably more difficult with
the 1.4X installed. Unfortunately, the only Nikkor 2X that will
normally fit (TC200/1), while not unsharp on the 80-200, is low in
contrast - the image quality is not high with it unless the lens is
stopped down to unusefully slow stops (two stops loss when using a
2X...). I modified a TC20E (which normally physically fits only the
few VERY expensive I and S Nikkors) to fit normal Nikkors (with rear
elements sufficiently recessed to accept the projecting front element
of the TC20E. I found that I preferred the TC300/1 on lenses that I
had that fit both converters, but the modified TC20E will fit the
80-200 and the TC300/1 will not. Performance is better than with the
TC200/1 on the 80-200, but not superb (good by about f4 at the short
end, OK by f5.6 or so at the long end) - anyone want a modified-but-LN
Nikkor TC20E for $375? ;-)
Hope This Helps
