They are designed for different-type lenses. The TC300/1 will not
physically fit most lenses (only ones with deeply-recessed rear elements, and which benefit from having the converter optics
nearer the lens rear glass). The TC200/1 will physically fit
virtually all Nikkors, but it does not perform as well on the
lenses the bigger TC fits. The TC 300/1 is really excellent on
the big EDIF lenses, and is even quite good with the lenses wide
open - the TC200/1 does not perform as well on any lens, but can
be quite good on some mid-range FL lenses if stopped well down.
I find the short TC most useful for macro work at small stops,
and for the occasional emergency lengthening of short teles.
