I don't know the answer to your question, but one answer
may be that it was designed specifically for the Nikkor
300mm f2, and while it is really excellent (and better
than the TC14B on most lenses they will fit), it sold for
$1000 directly from Nikon when it was available at all
as a separate item, and was always a very low-volume
converter...
