Hi--

The only thing I can think of (using Spark software) is that when you
have the camera on, then open the Spark software, then open an AVI file,
(order is everything with this buggy software!), you then click on the
tiny little "video monitor" button and the on screen little display goes away and you are out to the camera (set in "VCR" mode, with lights on -
and a TV hooked up to the camera will show the video). Check in the
device list under "Tools" in Spark to see if it lists "unknown DV device"
at the bottom. If not, turn off the camera, then turn it back on. At this point you can start the camcorder recording by pressing the "record-DVin" button on the camcorder, if I remember all that right...;-) Just remember
to return the display to the desktop on Spark before trying to shut the
buggy stuff down to avoid lock-up... I have been using "DV-Deck" for
output to camcorder since it is neater, and with a 3.75-4 second
"leader" on each AVI file, it is possible to make a fairly tight assembly-edit when putting multiple AVI files back to tape (you can
use the camcorder remote to back up to the last recorded frame before
recording the next - using the DV-Deck controls to start the camcorder
recording [with its 3.75 sec start-up delay...]). It helps here to do a few-second dummy play first, to avoid seeing "grey-blocks" soon after
recording is started. The download site URL is:
http://www.adaptec.com/adaptec/developers/1394/files.html
Please DO NOT post this address!!! Give it out only to individuals
privately, with the same request not to publish it! (Otherwise it will
probably go away - it is a hidden page on the Adaptec site, and it will almost certainly not remain if overused, since this a site where
non-released software appears - but it works VERY well!) There is a
Premiere plug-in included which allows playing of AVI files off the
timeline directly to the camera, but it doesn't work for me for more
than a couple of minutes without "grey-blocks" - if you solve this one,
LET ME KNOW! (It is the workaround for the 2-gig AVI file limit.)
Also, Spark has a Beta release of its new software on the DPS site under
"downloads" or some such - I just grabbed it today, but I have not tried
it yet (sounds similar to DV-Deck, could be the same...).

BTW, I worked again on this original problem, and could find no useful
Premiere preview setting other than preview window at 360x240 - at
180x120 I got good synch, but such fuzzy resolution it was worthless -
and larger or smaller than 360x240 the preview is no smoother...
Out to TV for occasional checks, still, I guess... (though synch has
not been a problem so long as the tracks are not decoupled from the video
at any time [when I took some out for filtering in Cool Edit, I had to manually synch them on return...]). Good luck! Let me know if anything works!
