These VAIO computers do look like good buys, but I have doubts about
their usefulness for serious work straight out of the box (I would
immediately try to add at least one additional drive...). If you
are up to the abuse/challenge/horror of building your own, you
can build a completely customized/optimized computer for the same
or lower price that has greater capability. There are also
relatively inexpensive "bare-bones" systems available to which
drives and a mini-DV capture card can be added. The appeal of
the VAIO is that it is turn-key system at a budget price, and that
is a neat idea - but it appears to have one serious failing that
could have been corrected at fairly low additional cost...
