Mostly a myth... The filter (IR) is not needed, but red and IR
filters will slightly enhance the effect of daylight-IR shooting
with Sony "night-shot" camcorders (set the camcorder in
"night-shot" mode and B&W picture effect [and add a red
filter and polarizer for good measure ;-], and enjoy videoing
scenery with black skies and white foliage...). Forget the
"see through" nonsense, it just (kinda) works on open-weave
(or other nearly see-through [without needing IR...;-]) cloth
types anyway. I've had a lot of fun shooting with my TRV-9
in IR mode, but not for the reason that keeps coming up
here...
