Ah, I shoot 3-D subjects, like bugs, around 1:1, and the light is soft,
like a hazy-bright day. If you are out at 1:4, say, the light will be
coming more apparently from the lens position, and will be harder, since
the source will be relatively smaller compared with the subject.

I adapted one that came with a flash, though you could make one from
a flat aluminum or wood bar (maybe 1"x6-7") with two holes in it
(one at each end) to pass the 1/4 - 20 screws that attach the bar
to the tripod socket, and the end of the remote cord to the other
end of the bar (sticky-backed rubber can cover one side to protect
the camera and cord end bottoms).
