The SB-17 is ideal for your purposes, I think. $90 is a good price,
if the flash is in nice condition. You may want an AS-7 shoe, or
the remote cord, which will enable you to set up TTL fill ratios
(with film speeds less than 160-200, or so). If you can do without
the VF ready light, and remember to set the shutter speed at or
below the synch. speed, covering the center pin on the F3 shoe will leave the ambient light meter on when the flash is on. I would use
a cp05Y filter on all Nikon flashes previous to the AF models to
make the flash light color more neutral.
