Consider the SB-17 - it is somewhat less powerful, but far more compact
(and it is one great flash for macro work when on the remote TTL cord,
and placed near the front of the lens) - its "tilt-o-whirl" movement
capabilities make it special, allowing the flash to be above the lens
for vertical and horizontal photos. Combined with the remote cord or
AS-7 shoe, you can even control TTL fill-ratios (up to about 200 ASA)
with F3-mount TTL flashes. I recommend adding a cp05Y filter to
Nikon flashes of this era to bring them to a more normal-looking
color for color slides. BTW, if you want the F3 ambient-light meter
to stay on when the flash is on, cover the middle of the three TTL
terminals with a bit of tape - you lose the VF ready light and auto
speed-drop to sync.-speed, but that is a good trade for me.
Hope This Helps
