The "R" control is the rewind release...
I didn't dislike the images made with the 35 f2.8 Sonnar model - but
the images just didn't have the wiry "snap" I like, and the Tessar/Xenar
lensed versions did (though the Sonnar does show generally higher
resolution [especially in the corners] than the Tessar/Xenar lenses
[but one almost always hears that the Sonnar is better - I don't think
so...;-]). BTW, I also prefer the match-needle metered non-"E" versions
to the "E" (three LED) versions. While having the meter indicator in
the VF would seem to be an advantage, the controls are VERY hard to
operate with the camera at eye level - with the top-mounted match-needle,
the camera metering is done with the camera lowered (as if it were just a meter...), where the meter indicator and the controls are all easily seen,
and the controls are easier to operate (and the meter of the match-needle version appears to have better low-light sensitivity).
BTW, soon after the Rollei 35 first came out in the US, "Consumer Reports"
covered compact 35mm cameras, and even put in a side-bar pointing out
why they thought the Rollei 35 was a bad camera choice... (but it seems
most of the "better" competitors of the time have slipped into relative obscurity...;-).
Hope This Helps
