I prefer to work directly on the timeline. (I make
the preview window "single view" and full-size.)
Mark the cut point with the cursor at the exact
frame, grab the "razor" tool and click on either
the video or audio track a bit to the right of
the cursor (the cut will be at the cursor...),
and click on and delete the parts you don't want
(you can always draw these parts back out, if
wanted, by grabbing the clip ends). Overlap the
clips in order on the V1A and V1B tracks (use the
"double-arrow" tool, found underneath the "lasso"
tool, to drag everything to its right either right
or left to open or close gaps in the timeline).
Drag transitions into the overlap areas, and move
the clips to adjust exactly the transition lengths.
Scrub the timeline with the "Alt" key depressed to
see the transitions, filters, etc. Put the "work
area bar" over the area of interest to see these
previewed, and hit the "Enter" key to render and
view the marked area. I find this method more
direct and intuitive than using the dual (tiny)
windows, and more consistent with other operations
normally caried out in editing (like using key-framed
filters, effects, etc.).
